La Plata Conservation District

2024-2026 Scholarship Announcement

The La Plata Conservation District is awarding a two-year scholarship to one qualified La Plata County high school senior who will graduate in May, 2024.  The amount of the scholarship is $2,000 per year for two years, subject to maintaining a 3.0 grade point average every semester for the duration of the scholarship. The La Plata Conservation District considers the scholarship as an investment in the future by giving a qualified student financial assistance as she/he pursues a degree in higher education.

Applications are available by calling (no texting please) Dr. Helen Ruth Aspaas at 970-385-4500.  Please leave a message with a convenient phone number and she will return the call.  Additional application forms will be available through high school guidance counselors at Animas High School, Bayfield High School, Durango High School, Ignacio High School and at the La Plata County Extension Office in Durango beginning on September 1, 2023.

Any resident of La Plata County who has been accepted or is currently enrolled at an accredited institution of higher learning for the 2024-2025 academic year as a full time student (at least 12 credit hours per semester) may apply.  No restrictions will be placed on applications by reason of race, color, religion (creed), age, sex, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation or military status. In the application form, applicants are encouraged to state how their academic and career objectives might relate to the goals of the La Plata Conservation District.

Applications must be mailed to Dr. Helen Ruth Aspaas (address is on the application form) by April 2, 2024. Applications will be reviewed by the La Plata Conservation District Board of Directors and the recipient will be notifed by mid-May, 2024.  The scholarship payments are made on a semester by semester basis subject to maintaining a 3.0 GPA.   Payment is made directly to the recipient’s account at her/his institution of higher learning.

Dr. Aspaas, Scholarship Program Coordinator,  (phone:  970-385-4500) will gladly answer any questions. Unfortunately, no text messages can be accepted, so please leave your name and a good call-back number.
